N Gauge

Clintons Bend (Available for exhibiton)

Picture
Clintons Bend is a continuous run layout set in the region of the real life town of Clinton, Iowa on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.  The route is a busy one with a steady stream of passenger and freight traffic plying between the Great Lakes and the Far West. The layout features three distinct areas separated by scenic breaks.

Winsford Hill (Currently under reconstruction)

Picture
The layout features a two track main line alongside a rail served stone quarry. It is loosely based on the Windsor Hill tunnel section of the Somerset & Dorset line featuring the unusual separated tunnels. There is regular passing traffic on the mains lines, whilst wagons are shunted / loaded and dispatched from the quarry.

Ipswich South Bank (Available for exhibition)

Picture
Measuring 8' by 2'6", Ipswich South Bank was started as a Junior layout, representing today's railway and drawing inspiration from the railways around Ipswich. It is has undergone major rebuild to make it more prototypical, interesting and reliable in operation... For more information and photographs click HERE.

Grafton Group

Llwyndre Rhaeadre - Grafton Waterfall 009 (Available for exhibition)

Picture
A typical Welsh narrow gauge slate mine scene in OO9. 1:76 scale (4mm to foot). The 2ft 3in narrow gauge line is now a tourist attraction for the waterfall, viaduct and slate mine tour. The short head shunt remains where the mining spoil was tipped into the valley. The valley is not as deep as it was.

RHAEADR is waterfall but as far as we know the word LLWYNDRE doesn't exist as such in Welsh.
Dre, see Tre.
Tre(f) = homestead, hamlet, town.
Llwyn = grove, bush.

Since Grafton comes from old English for "The Homestead in the Grove" then a literal translation of Grafton into Welsh, rendered as a Welsh place name, would be Llwyndre or Llwyn-dre.

Grafton Green (Available for exhibition)

Picture
Grafton Green is a 4mm scale, 'OO' gauge , exhibition layout, set in the 1940’s East End of London.

Trams run on the high street, tube train in the “cut and cover” and suburban trains trundle over the arches.

The tramway includes conduit, a plough pit, crossover and convergence to a single track. For more information click here

Grafton Viaduct

Picture
Grafton Viaduct is an OO gauge "hands on" layout for use at exhibitions and open days. The era is set in the modern steam/diesel age and we use this layout to encourage younger visitors to "play trains"!

O Gauge

Crossleigh

Picture
Crossleigh is the Association's 0 gauge layout built to fine scale standards - 32 mm scale. 29 mm back to back.

It is a terminus to fiddle yard layout approximately 32 feet by 20 feet.   This includes a medium size junction station with goods and loco facilities, with a single track main line running through to the fiddle yard.

A branch line also starts from the main station climbing to a high level station.

Holmehurst (Available for exhibition)

Picture
Holmehurst was originally built and exhibited at 30 shows between 1995 - 2003, by a former member / Chairman; Keith Lodge. Having taken early retirement and with plans to fulfil his dreams to live on a narrow boat, Keith very kindly donated the layout to IRMA.

The layout was built as purely GWR operation (just post war). Following discussions with the various club members from the 'O' gauge group, it was agreed that to accommodate the variety of stock owned by members (both regions and period) that the layout would be better operated as a preserved line. To achieve this only a small number of changes have been made replacing vehicles and people with more modern ones.

The layout is normally in storage away from the club rooms (space limitations), but has been erected for club open days and has appeared at some local exhibitions.

00 Gauge

Barham Junction

Picture
Barham Junction is the club's newest layout which is replacing Marshmoor, we are currently looking for some sort of suggestions for what we could include. The club is very excited about this new layout and we will be updating information and a small diary with new information.

Click HERE for more information and photos of the layout in construction and running.

Kingsthorpe Junction

Picture
Kingsthorpe Junction is situated on a cross-country Midlands to East Anglia route somewhere in South Lincolnshire / Cambridgeshire and is set in the ealy to mid 1960’s and represents a once important cross-roads between five routes.

Normal operation is using DCC controllers and DCC fitted locomotives with the layout – this is IRMA's first DCC layout. Limited analogue operation is also possible as the layout is split into 3 DCC zones: outer circuit, inner circuit and branch line/yard, however there are no isolating sections!

Welton Industrial

Picture
Welton Industrial is named after the previous club president, Ken Welton who sadly passed away.

The layout is privately owned by a small group of club members and is still under construction but can be seen running at our open days.

Junior Bressingham Layout

Picture
A group of the younger juniors decided they wanted to start their own layout, so have decided to construct a layout  based on Bressingham a steam preservation museum.

More details of the layout to follow soon, but in the meanwhile for pictures on construction click here

Enquiries regarding the layouts should be made via the relevant PDF, Club Email or the Exhibition Manager.
